House Speaker Mike Johnson on Thursday predicted Republicans would “very soon” come to a “point of decision” on whether to impeach President Joe Biden.

Johnson, the Louisiana Republican who was elected speaker last week, was addressing reporters on Capitol Hill in his first news conference as speaker. He said lawmakers are going through a constitutional process, echoing comments to Fox News’s Sean Hannity that Republicans are following the impeachment inquiry into Biden because it’s their “constitutional responsibility.”

In September, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry into Biden, saying House Republicans had uncovered credible allegations about his conduct.

A White House spokesman pushed back at the time by saying Republicans had not turned up any evidence of wrongdoing and called the inquiry “extreme politics at its worst.”

Polling released last month showed that a narrow majority of Americans opposed the inquiry against Biden launched by House Republicans, which is investigating allegations of wrongdoing in connection with his son Hunter’s business dealings.

If the Republican-led House were to impeach Biden, charges would then be sent to the Democratic-controlled Senate for a trial.
