Merry Christmas!

A sacred event on the Christian calendar, Christmas falls on Monday, Dec. 25. Naturally, many government offices, businesses and services will be shuttered that day. There will be closures on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, as well, though some of those are due to the fact it’s a Sunday this year.

Financial markets — the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and bond markets — will also be closed on Christmas Day.

Here’s a full rundown of what to expect.

Mail and packages

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 and local post offices will also be closed. Priority Express Mail will be delivered on both days, however.

FedEx

Banks

Most banks will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25. But you can always visit an ATM or use your bank’s app for certain services.

Government offices

All nonessential federal offices are closed on Dec. 25 and the same generally applies to state government offices.

Schools

Public schools and many private schools generally won’t be open on Dec. 24 Dec. 25, which for most schools fall during the longer winter break.

Stores

If you need to do any shopping on Dec. 25, you’ll have limited options. Certain supermarkets and pharmacy and convenience stores will be open, but in some cases hours will be limited.

On Dec. 24, stores will generally be open — it’s the last-minute holiday rush, after all — but some might close early. It’s always important to check before you head out.

Restaurants

As with stores, many restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day, but there are exceptions, ranging from Benihana to Waffle House. On Christmas Eve, more dining spots are likely to be open.
