The U.K.’s competition regulator said it is opening an investigation into multiple television producers, creators and broadcasters in relation to the purchase of services from freelance providers, and the employment of staff.

The Competition and Markets Authority said Thursday that it has launched an investigation into whether there were infringements of competition rules related to the purchase of services from those who support the production, creation or broadcasting of television content in the U.K., excluding sport content.

The CMA said it is investigating whether there were breaches by ITV and the BBC, among others.

“The BBC notes the Competition and Markets Authority’s announcement and will fully cooperate with the CMA’s inquiries,” a BBC spokesperson said.

ITV confirmed it had received a case-initiation notice from the CMA. “ITV is committed to complying with competition law and to cooperating with the CMA’s inquiries. ITV does not propose to comment further at this stage,” the company said.
